The Story

Taken from Baker Publishing Group’s website description of With Every Breath:

In the shadow of the nation’s capital, Kate Livingston’s respectable life as a government worker is disrupted by an encounter with the insufferable Trevor McDonough, the one man she’d hoped never to see again. A Harvard-trained physician, Trevor never showed the tiniest flicker of interest in Kate, and business is the only reason he has sought her out now.

Despite her misgivings, Kate agrees to Trevor’s risky proposal to join him in his work to find a cure for tuberculosis. As Kate begins to unlock the mysteries of Trevor’s past, his hidden depths fascinate her. However, a shadowy enemy lies in wait and Trevor’s closely guarded secrets are darker than she ever suspected.

As revelations from the past threaten to destroy their careers, their dreams, and even their lives, Trevor and Kate find themselves in a painfully impossible situation. With everything to lose, they must find the strength to trust that hope and love can prevail over all.

With Every Breath is a powerful novel that swept me into the story, causing me to think about the characters whenever I needed to put it down to take care of things of greater priority, like homework. 🙂 There are certain things I always expect from Elizabeth: rich historical detail, edge-of-your-seat suspense, deep characters, and a strong romance thread. She delivered once again with this novel, but I think this may be my favorite of her books. The issue of tuberculosis and how it is one of the major antagonists in the story was really interesting, and added an element of unknown, as I never knew what turn the plot would take next. The characters and what they must overcome was also a huge highlight. Fear is a terrible monster to face, and trust, its greatest enemy, can be elusive. Both Trevor and Kate must face the beast head-on. Only one—fear or trust—can win, and I can guarantee that the battle is not going to be easy. I love how Elizabeth creates her characters with such strong personalities and how she weaves their love stories, never making the relationships too easy for the characters.

There was a lull in the story about thirty pages from the end, but then it picked back up again, barreling ahead full force.

This book was a joy to read, and I will definitely be picking it up again in the future. Fans of Elizabeth Camden will not be disappointed, and the new historical fiction reader who stumbles across her books will find a delightful new author to add to their go-tos.

  2. Wow, this looks really good. Just wondering, what is the level of romance in this novel? I generally don’t like too much romance, so I’m wondering. =)

    • Hi Victoria, thanks for stopping by! With Every Breath definitely has a strong level of romance, with that being one of the primary things that drives the plot in the novel. Of the books I read, Elizabeth Camden’s books are probably the most passionate romances (while still staying clean).
